Pay To Work! Kyankwanzi Official Busted In Nursing Job Bribery Scandal

By Our Reporter

A secretary in the Health Department of Kyankwanzi District, Tumusiime Julian, has been charged and remanded for allegedly defrauding job seekers by helping them secure government positions.

According to a joint operation conducted by the Anti-Corruption Unit, Criminal Investigations Directorate, and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Tumusiime was arraigned before the Magistrates Court in Kyankwanzi on charges of obtaining money by false pretence and demanding money by menaces.

The court heard that Tumusiime, with intent to defraud, obtained UGX 5 million from a victim desperately seeking a nursing job within the Kyankwanzi Local Government. She allegedly promised to use her position to influence the recruitment process and secure the job — a promise that turned out to be false.

Further investigations revealed a wider extortion racket, with Tumusiime and accomplices — who are still at large — accused of soliciting money from multiple job seekers across the district under similar pretenses.

Authorities say the case is part of a growing trend of recruitment-related fraud targeting unemployed youth and professionals in Uganda.

The accused has been remanded until July 22, 2025, as investigations continue.

The Anti-Corruption Unit has urged the public to report any instances of bribery or fraud in public service recruitment, stressing that such acts not only exploit vulnerable citizens but also undermine trust in government institutions.
