Breaking: Defence, Science & Tech Ministers Perish In Helicopter Crash

By Our Reporter

Ghana has been plunged into mourning following the tragic crash of a military helicopter in the Ashanti Region that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two government ministers and senior security officials.

The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that the Z-9 military helicopter, which went off radar on Wednesday afternoon, was en route to Obuasi in the Adansi Akrofuom District when the fatal incident occurred. Wreckage was later discovered in a forested area, with no survivors found at the scene.

The victims of the crash include some of the nation’s top leaders and military personnel:

  • Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
  • Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation
  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
  • Mr Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate
  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
  • Flying Officer Twum Ampadu
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

Graphic images from the crash site revealed the charred remains of the aircraft, now a symbol of sorrow for a nation grappling with the magnitude of the loss. The identities of the deceased were confirmed late Wednesday evening after emergency response teams reached the remote crash site.

Initial reports suggest that the helicopter may have encountered technical difficulties mid-flight, though military authorities say a full investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the crash.

In a solemn statement issued by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, the Office of the President described the incident as a “monumental loss to the country,” noting that the deceased were serving Ghana in various capacities and were committed to national development.

“In honour of our fallen compatriots who died in the line of service, the President has directed that all national flags across the country be flown at half-mast with immediate effect,” the statement read.

The tragedy has sparked a national outpouring of grief, with tributes pouring in from across the political divide, civil society, and the international community.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to address the nation formally within the next 24 hours. Government sources also confirmed that a week of national mourning will be declared, and funeral arrangements will be handled with full state honours.

“These were men of valor and vision,” said a somber Speaker of Parliament during a late evening press briefing. “Ghana has lost some of her best minds.”

Legacy & Service

The late Dr Edward Omane Boamah had served in several key roles in government and was widely respected for his work in modernising Ghana’s defence infrastructure. Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed was a vocal advocate for environmental policy and had recently spearheaded a national reforestation campaign.

The loss of these senior figures creates a sudden vacuum in both the executive and national security sectors, prompting concerns over succession and continuity.

As investigations commence, aviation analysts and legislators have begun calling for a thorough audit of the country’s military aircraft fleet. Many have voiced concern over the aging helicopters and maintenance standards.

“This tragedy must mark a turning point in how we treat the safety of those who serve at the highest levels,” said a statement from the Ghana Bar Association.

The Ghana Armed Forces have pledged full cooperation with investigative teams, and an independent inquiry may be launched to ensure transparency and public trust. International aviation experts are expected to join the probe.

For now, the country mourns — flags at half-mast, the air heavy with grief — as Ghana prepares to bid farewell to some of her finest sons.
