History Made: Buweekula Lifts 1st Ever Masaza Cup After Thrilling Victory Over Ssingo

By Our Reporter

In a thrilling finale to the 2025 Masaza Cup, Buweekula Ssaza made history on Saturday, claiming their first-ever Masaza Cup trophy after edging past two-time champions Ssingo 1–0 in a tightly contested match.

The match, held at the newly refurbished Nakivubo Stadium, drew a large and enthusiastic crowd, with fans from across Buganda turning out to witness the long-awaited crowning of a new champion. The stadium, selected due to ongoing renovations at Mandela National Stadium (Namboole), provided a vibrant backdrop for the kingdom’s premier football tournament.

Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, who had just returned from a week-long official visit to the United Kingdom, presided over the final, expressing delight at seeing the kingdom united through sport. The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, echoed the sentiment, noting that the Masaza Cup continues to promote Buganda’s fifth major pillar — unity — and welcomes participation from all, regardless of ethnicity.

Buweekula’s journey to glory was a testament to resilience and determination. The Ssaza had overcome Kyaggwe 4–3 on penalties in a dramatic semifinal, following a 1–1 aggregate draw in a rain-soaked encounter at Bishop’s SS Mukono. The victory was particularly sweet for Buweekula, who had been eliminated by Kyaggwe at the same stage last season.

Head coach Felix Ssekabuuza celebrated the historic triumph, saying, “This win means everything to us. We have worked hard all season, and beating Kyaggwe, a team that stopped us last year makes it even more special. Now we shift focus to the final. We respect Ssingo, but we are coming for the trophy.”

The final was a tense affair, with both teams displaying disciplined defense and tactical precision. Collins Ssemmanda’s decisive goal secured Buweekula’s 1–0 win, sending fans into jubilation as the Ssaza lifted the trophy for the first time in their history.

For Ssingo, this marked their sixth Masaza Cup final appearance, with the team previously winning the tournament twice. Despite their loss, the two-time champions were praised for their valiant effort and consistent performances throughout the season.

The 2025 Masaza Cup, sponsored by Airtel Uganda, Pilsner King, and Centenary Bank, continues to be a key platform for promoting unity, sportsmanship, and community pride across the Buganda Kingdom.

With Buweekula finally breaking their finals curse, the Ssaza now stands as a symbol of perseverance, inspiring younger generations across the kingdom to dream big both on and off the pitch.
