A series of coordinated attacks rocked parts of the Rwenzori region on the morning of Saturday, November 1, 2025, leaving at least twenty suspected assailants dead and thirty-five others in custody, authorities confirmed.

The violence unfolded across multiple locations, including Fort Portal City’s North Division, Bundibugyo district, and Kasese town. Armed with machetes, pangas, and other weapons, the attackers reportedly attempted to target educational institutions, including Canon Apollo Teachers College and Nyakasura School, as well as security installations in Bundibugyo and Kasese districts.

Joseph Mashuhuko, chairperson of North Division, Fort Portal, said security forces swiftly responded to the threat, preventing civilian casualties. “Thanks to the prompt intervention by police, General Intelligence Security Officers, and the army, the attackers were neutralized before causing harm to students or residents,” Mashuhuko stated.

The confrontations resulted in multiple fatalities among the attackers: five were killed near Canon Apollo, four in Karago town council, and an additional nine in Kasese town and Rugendabara. Over thirty suspects were arrested, and authorities confiscated weapons, stones, suspected drugs, and other items linked to the planned attacks.

In Bundibugyo, Lt. Maj. Jones Mugabirwe, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), reported that two attackers were killed and five others apprehended during operations near Kakuka and Malindi UPDF detachments in Sindila sub-county, close to the Ugandan-DR Congo border. The assailants, dressed in civilian clothing and armed with machetes, bows, arrows, and firearms, reportedly targeted security installations.

Uganda Police Statement On Rwenzori Region Attacks

Local residents recounted chaotic scenes during the attacks. Akimu Mujungu, who was collecting grasshoppers in Sindila, said, “Bullets were coming from every corner; we just managed to escape. UPDF officers warned us to run for safety.” Hundreds of residents fled the affected areas but have been urged to return home as security forces restore order.

The RDCs for Kasese and Bundibugyo praised the professionalism of security personnel. Lt. Joe Walusimbi of Kasese said, “Their bravery saved many lives. We encourage residents to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with security agencies to ensure peace.”

While no civilians were harmed, six police officers sustained injuries during the operations, including one from Kasese and five from Rugendabara. Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the motives behind the attacks and to track down any remaining suspects.

These attacks echo past incidents in the region, including the tragic events of November 2016, when clashes between security forces and a separatist militia in Kasese claimed at least 55 lives, including 14 police officers.

Uganda Police Force stated that intensified patrols and intelligence operations are underway across the Rwenzori region to prevent further violence and maintain stability.
