By Frank Kamuntu

The latest coming from Kassanda indicates that a police officer attached at Makokoto police post, Makokoto sub county has ended his own life by shooting.

Wamala Region Police Spokesperson Kawala Rachael says the deceased is No.1037 PC Kitiyo Alex, a 47-year old resident of Makokoto Trading Center.

She says that preliminary facts indicate that on 24/5/2023 at about 500am at Makokota trading centre Police constable Kitiyo woke up and shot several bullets into the room of his in charge, John Kakooza while not talking any thing, then he later returned to his room sat on his bed and shot him self dead.

”Scene of crime has been visited and documented by our task team Relevant statements are being recorded to guide on investigation,” says Kawala.

This incident occurs at a time when the public is raising concerns about gun violence in Uganda. Just few days ago, a police man shot and killed a UPDF officer in Mbarara, a day before that, a security guard shot dead himself at Lumumba Avenue making a total of six people who have been silenced by guns in one month including a murder by shooting of Col Charles Okello Engola, the Deputy Minister for Gender and Labour, who was killed by his security guard few weeks ago.

In the 2022 police annual crime report, Kampala Metropolitan North registered the highest number of murders by shooting within the city, registering 19 cases, followed by KMP East with 10 cases, while KMP South registered 8 cases.

Some of the killings have been blamed on elements linked to the Islamic extremist Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group. Others were either targeted attacks or simply the consequence of violent crime.
