Speaker Anita Among Takes Action On KCCA Cleaners’ Grievances

By Jamillah Oluka

In a move to address long-standing grievances, the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Anita Among, recently met with a group of cleaners from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) who brought forth a myriad of complaints. Among their concerns were the abrupt termination of their contracts and the failure of KCCA to remit their National Social Security Fund (NSSF) contributions for over five months.

The cleaners, who came to Parliament seeking redress for their grievances, found a receptive ear in Speaker Among, who wasted no time in addressing their concerns. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Speaker Among promptly called for a meeting scheduled for next Tuesday, bringing together KCCA leaders and area Members of Parliament (MPs) to seek a conclusive resolution.

The issues raised by the cleaners highlight systemic challenges within the KCCA and underline the importance of ensuring fair treatment and compliance with labor regulations. The termination of contracts without due process not only affects the livelihoods of the cleaners but also raises questions about employment practices within the authority.

Furthermore, the failure to remit NSSF contributions underscores the broader issue of social security and financial stability for workers. Delayed or non-payment of such contributions not only deprives employees of their entitlements but also undermines their long-term financial security.

Speaker Among’s proactive approach in convening a meeting demonstrates a commitment to addressing these issues head-on and finding tangible solutions. By bringing together key stakeholders, including KCCA leadership and MPs representing the affected areas, she is facilitating a collaborative effort to resolve the grievances effectively.

This initiative serves as a testament to the role of parliamentary leadership in championing the rights and welfare of citizens. Speaker Among’s willingness to engage with grassroots concerns reflects a responsive and accountable governance approach, essential for fostering trust and inclusivity within the democratic process.

As the meeting approaches, there is optimism that meaningful progress will be made in addressing the concerns of the KCCA cleaners. By working together to identify and rectify systemic challenges, stakeholders can pave the way for a fairer and more equitable working environment, ultimately benefiting both employees and the broader community.
