In a recent announcement that signals a significant shift in the leadership of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) has confirmed the promotion of several distinguished officers. The promotions favors key figures who will now hold higher ranks and commands within the prestigious divisions.
The newly promoted officers are senior figures within the UPDF, each assuming the title of Acting Major General. This change is effective immediately, and each officer will now take charge of one of the army’s critical infantry divisions. The promoted officers include:
- Brigadier General Stephen Mugerwa – Acting Major General, Commander of the 1st Infantry Division
Brigadier General Stephen Mugerwa has been elevated to Acting Major General and will now lead the 1st Infantry Division, a vital wing of the UPDF. His leadership will be pivotal in advancing the Division’s strategic objectives and ensuring operational success in both domestic and international engagements. As the new commander, he brings with him a wealth of experience from his previous roles within the army. - Brigadier General Paul Muhanguzi – Acting Major General, Commander of the 2nd Infantry Division
Brigadier General Paul Muhanguzi is another officer promoted to the rank of Acting Major General. He will take command of the 2nd Infantry Division, another cornerstone of the UPDF. His appointment is seen as a testament to his deep understanding of military operations and his ability to effectively lead his troops in various combat scenarios. - Brigadier General Felix Busizori – Acting Major General, Commander of the 4th Infantry Division
With the promotion of Brigadier General Felix Busizori, the 4th Infantry Division is now under new leadership. This promotion signifies the trust the UPDF leadership has in Busizori’s strategic acumen and military experience. As Acting Major General, he is expected to play an integral role in strengthening the Division’s operations and enhancing its combat readiness. - Brigadier General Keith Katungi – Acting Major General, Commander of the 5th Infantry Division
Brigadier General Keith Katungi rounds out the list of promotions, taking on the responsibility of leading the 5th Infantry Division as Acting Major General. Known for his outstanding military service and tactical expertise, Katungi’s promotion is expected to bring fresh insights and renewed vigor to the Division’s operations.
Each promoted officer will face critical responsibilities, including overseeing large units, maintaining operational efficiency, and ensuring the readiness of their respective divisions to handle any security threats facing Uganda. Their leadership will play a central role in the UPDF’s ongoing missions, both at home and in regional peacekeeping efforts.
