RIP! Senior UPDF Commander Colonel David Byaruhanga Dies

By Our Reporter

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is mourning the unexpected passing of Colonel David Byaruhanga, a highly respected senior commander, who died on Friday afternoon at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala.

The news of his passing was confirmed by Captain David Kamya, the Public Relations Officer of the UPDF’s 4th Division, who expressed deep sorrow, stating, “He has died as a hero, and we shall remember him.”

A Legacy Of Dedicated Service

At the time of his passing, Colonel Byaruhanga was serving as the commander of the 409 Brigade at Bondo Barracks in Arua District. His military career was distinguished by key leadership roles, shaping both national and regional security efforts.

Previously, he commanded the 405 Brigade at Nakapelimoru Army Barracks in Kotido District, where he played a crucial role in disarmament operations in the Karamoja sub-region—a mission vital to restoring peace and stability in the area.

In May 2023, he assumed this command from Colonel Wilberforce Karate Sserunkuma, in a handover ceremony presided over by Brigadier General Felix Busizoori, the 3rd Division Deputy Commander.

Contributions To Regional Stability

Colonel Byaruhanga’s commitment to peace and security extended beyond Uganda’s borders. He led the Ugandan Battle Group 34 under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), contributing significantly to efforts aimed at stabilizing the region.

His leadership, dedication, and sacrifice earned him widespread respect both nationally and internationally, reinforcing Uganda’s role in regional peacekeeping missions.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
