Uganda Police Bans Children From Seating In Front Seats, Enforces Strict New Rules

By Our Reporter

The Uganda Police Force has introduced a series of strict road safety measures aimed at reducing the alarming rise in road accidents across the country, with a special focus on safeguarding children in vehicles.

Addressing the media, Superintendent of Police (SP) Michael Kananura, the Police Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson, emphasized that children must be properly secured while traveling in vehicles—warning that laxity will no longer be tolerated.

“Children below the age of 5 must be placed in approved child restraints, which must be installed in the back seats of vehicles,” said SP Kananura. “It is now strictly prohibited to carry children on laps while driving, or to allow them to sit in the front passenger seat.”

The directive also extends to older children. SP Kananura noted that:

“Children aged 6 to 12 must also not sit in the front seats. They are required to sit at the back and wear seat belts at all times.”

These measures are part of a broader campaign by the Uganda Police to enforce road safety regulations and reduce fatalities, particularly among vulnerable passengers like young children.

Drivers across the country have been warned to comply with the new rules or face legal consequences. The police say they will increase spot checks and roadside enforcement to ensure full compliance.

The move has been welcomed by child safety advocates who have long called for stricter enforcement of child passenger safety laws. According to recent traffic reports, improper restraint of children has been a key factor in many fatal accidents involving minors.

The Uganda Police Force is urging parents, guardians, and all motorists to prioritize the safety of children by following the new guidelines without exception.
