Worshippers and tourists at St. Peter’s Basilica were left stunned on Friday after an unidentified man reportedly climbed the Altar of Confession and urinated on it during a 9:00 a.m. Holy Mass.
According to local media reports, the man, whose identity remains unknown, suddenly ascended the altar — one traditionally reserved for papal celebrations — dropped his pants, and relieved himself in full view of shocked onlookers.
Eyewitnesses say the bizarre incident unfolded within seconds, with many initially thinking it was a protest or a mental breakdown. Security personnel quickly intervened, apprehending the man and escorting him out of the basilica as horrified tourists recorded the ordeal.
Videos circulating online show the individual pulling up his jeans after the act, prompting gasps and outrage from those present. The footage has since gone viral, drawing widespread condemnation and calls for tighter security at one of the world’s holiest Christian sites.
It remains unclear whether Pope Francis was present or presiding over the Mass at the time of the incident. Vatican authorities have not yet released an official statement on the matter or the man’s possible motives.
The Altar of the Confession, located directly above St. Peter’s tomb, is considered one of the most sacred parts of the basilica and is normally used exclusively for papal liturgies.
The Vatican Gendarmerie is reportedly investigating the case, while church officials are expected to conduct a purification ritual before the altar is used again.
