Today’s parliamentary session has brought in lots of key talking points following the heavy security deployment and road blockages outside Parliament.
As the session went on, when Busia Municipality MP Geoffrey Macho was on the floor, he made a statement to Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, calling his boss a useless person.
Macho’s statement brought in a lot of disorder in the house as Ssenyonyi tried to attack back.
Ssenyonyi later on stated that with Macho calling his boss a useless person, he is referring to the speaker himself and so ordered Macho to apologise to the speaker.
“My boss in this house is you, the speaker of Parliament. I work under you. We all work under you. Is Hon. Macho in order to say that the speaker speaks hopelessly?” said Hon. Ssenyonyi.
Speaker Among then compelled Hon. Macho to withdraw his statement and issue an apology to Hon. Ssenyonyi, stating that he is not in order.
Hon. Macho did not back up after the speaker’s old and went to clarify that he was not referring to her but to the National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, aka Bobi Wine.
Even after the clarification, Macho was told to offer the apology, which he did.
The speaker’s authority to demand respect in the house is something that can not be taken for granted.
This will definitely ensure that all parties in the house receive equal respect, even those from the opposition side.
