Kenya’s opposition chief, Raila Odinga, was among the high-profile dignitaries attending the launch of the South Sudan Mediation Process at State House on Thursday, May 9.
Nairobi charged itself with ending the conflict and political instability in South Sudan under the Tumaini Initiative, which was backed by regional leaders.
President William Ruto was playing host to presidents and heads of state during the launch of the initiative.
The leaders in attendance included presidents Lazarus Chakwera (Malawi), Hakainde Hichilema (Zambia), Faustin-Archange Touadéra (Central African Republic), Emmerson Mnangagwa (Zimbabwe), Salva Kiir (South Sudan), and Moussa Faki, the African Union Commission chairperson.
Raila’s presence at the high-level assembly would not go unnoticed.
This was days after he castigated Ruto’s administration over what he suggested was cluelessness, unleashing harsh labels at the president and members of his cabinet.
He questioned if anything tangible had been done in the country since the opposition coalition party called off street protests.
Raila accused Ruto of appointing supposedly corrupt loyalists, pointing out the fertiliser scandal as a case for reference.
