Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gen. Kale Kayihura has officially joined the Governing Council of Ibanda University, taking up the role of Chairperson of the Planning and Development Committee. His appointment was unveiled on Monday during the inauguration ceremony of the university’s new Governing Council at AK Gardens Hotel in Ibanda Town.
The new council, which will serve a four-year term, has been tasked with steering the institution’s strategic direction as it continues to position itself as a growing center for academic excellence in Uganda’s private education sector.
Gen. Kayihura, a retired military officer and former head of Uganda Police who was relieved of his IGP duties in 2018, is expected to bring deep institutional knowledge and high-level strategic expertise to the university’s leadership.
According to Lawrence Mucunguzi, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Kayihura’s national leadership experience will be vital in guiding both the university’s physical infrastructure expansion and academic development.
“General Kayihura’s extensive background in national leadership, security, and strategic planning will be instrumental in guiding the university’s growth,” Mucunguzi stated.
In his acceptance remarks, Gen. Kayihura expressed appreciation for the opportunity and affirmed his commitment to supporting the university’s long-term vision.
“I am honored to serve in this capacity and contribute to the growth of an institution that stands for academic excellence and community transformation,” he said.
The Governing Council will be chaired by Dr. Clementia Mureembe, who was re-elected for another term. Dr. Mureembe pledged continuity and renewed dedication toward strengthening the university’s academic reputation.
“This is a moment of renewed commitment. Together with our dynamic team, we shall continue building a university that shapes future leaders,” she said.
Dr. John Busingye, Chairperson of the University’s Board of Directors, echoed optimism about the council’s makeup, describing the new leadership as a timely boost for the university’s ambitions.
“We are confident that the collective expertise of this new Governing Council, under the capable leadership of Dr. Mureembe and with Gen. Kayihura guiding our planning efforts, will greatly enhance the university’s vision of becoming a center of academic excellence and innovation,” he remarked.
The council also includes prominent figures from academia, government, and cultural institutions, such as Ms. Jovrine Kaliisa Kyomukama, Prof. Peter Kanyandago, Dr. Imelda Kemeza, and His Royal Highness Jude Mike Mudoma, Umukuuka III of Bugisu.
Established in 2014, Ibanda University has emerged as one of Uganda’s promising private higher education institutions, known for promoting accessibility, innovation, and community engagement in its academic model. The new council is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the university’s next phase of development.
