Former URA Officer Jailed Over Ugx100m Scandal, See How He Played Juicy Deals For Taxpayers!

By Our Reporter

Ronald Mutebi, a former URA staff has been remanded to prison on accusations of abuse of office and causing financial loss contrary to sections 10 and 19 of the Anti-Corruption Act 2023.

Mutebi, 36, a resident of Wakiso district, appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court presided over by Her Worship Esther Asiimwe earlier today. He was remanded until August 23, 2024, when he will appear in court.

The State Prosecution told the court that the suspect and others still at large initiated and approved an assessment using the e-tax credentials of another person in favour of another for the period from 1st July 2017 to 30th June 2018, an act that reduced the income tax liability from UGX 144.191 million to UGX 36.191 million.

The prosecution stated that Mutebi’s action caused a financial loss of UGX 108 million to the government.

Mutebi pleaded not guilty to the two counts, but due to a lack of sureties, he was remanded until tomorrow, when he will appear in court for a bail application.

Mutebi was dismissed by the Management Disciplinary Committee (MDC) on October 25, 2023, but appealed. The Staff Appeals Committee (SAC) sat on January 12, 2024, and upheld the MDC decision.

Having presented substantial sureties, Mutebi has since been granted bail by the Anti-Corruption Court.
