Kagezi Murder: Fresh Details Emerge On How Security Nabbed Top Police Boss Agasirwe

By Our Reporter

New details have emerged about the arrest of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nickson Agasirwe Karuhanga, a former head of the Police Special Operations Unit, who is now under investigation in connection with the 2015 assassination of Senior State Prosecutor Joan Kagezi.

Kagezi, a highly respected prosecutor, was gunned down by unidentified assailants on March 30, 2015, as she drove home through Kiwatule, a suburb of Kampala. Her murder has remained unsolved for nearly a decade, casting a long shadow over Uganda’s justice system—until now.

Key Breakthrough In Court

The case took a dramatic turn recently when Daniel Kiwanuka Kisekka, a former soldier and one of the suspects in the murder, gave new testimony before the High Court. Having already pleaded guilty, Kisekka claimed that the order to kill Kagezi came from a man known only as “Nixon.”

Kisekka further revealed that a man named Kibuuka told him the mission was financed by Nixon. According to his testimony, two days before the murder, he saw Nixon meeting Kibuuka in Kalerwe while driving a government-issued vehicle.

These revelations prompted immediate action from the security forces.

Arrest Operation

Following the court testimony, a multi-agency task force was swiftly assembled. The team—comprising operatives from the Flying Squad, the Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force, Special Forces Command (SFC), and detectives from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID)—moved to apprehend SSP Agasirwe.

Sources say Agasirwe was arrested on Wednesday night and taken to CID headquarters. He was later handed over to the Defence Intelligence and Security (DIS) team, formerly known as the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), for intensive interrogation.

While the investigation is still ongoing, the arrest of SSP Agasirwe represents the most significant development in the Kagezi case in years. With key suspects now cooperating and security agencies actively pursuing leads, authorities are optimistic that justice for Joan Kagezi may soon be within reach.
