The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) raised the salaries of their officers to show appreciation for their hard work. In 2024, the government approved a large budget to increase the pay of soldiers.
At the lowest rank, a Private now earns UGX 828,426 a month, which is much more than before. A Lance Corporal now gets UGX 1,003,025, and a Corporal earns UGX 1,117,848.
A Sergeant makes UGX 1,387,992, and a Staff Sergeant earns UGX 1,597,852.
Higher ranks like Warrant Officer II now earn UGX 1,856,445, and Warrant Officer I gets UGX 2,096,800.
A Second Lieutenant makes UGX 2,384,047, and a Lieutenant earns UGX 2,480,606. Captains now receive UGX 2,736,333.
For the highest rank, Generals earn much more. General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), gets about UGX 15 million (around $4,000) a month. This is in addition to benefits like housing, transport, security, and healthcare.
Before these changes, a General earned UGX 1.6 million, a Lieutenant General got UGX 1.5 million, and a Major General made UGX 1.4 million. Lower ranks earned less, with a Private getting UGX 310,000 per month.
The increase in pay shows that the government cares about the soldiers. These changes will help keep the army strong and motivated, making sure soldiers are rewarded for their service to the country.
