Residents of Akatooma Cell in Bwizibwera-Rutooma Town Council, Mbarara District, were left in shock and fear after the brutal murder of 30-year-old Ritah Akakunda, who was found dead in her home on Saturday morning under disturbing circumstances.
According to initial reports, Akakunda was at home with her sister-in-law, Winnie Kabaare, and the family’s shamba boy when her husband, Fred Kabaare, left for work in nearby Bwizibwera town. By the time he returned, he was met with a gruesome discovery—his wife was dead.
Local authorities responded swiftly to the scene with a sniffer dog to aid in the investigation. Preliminary inquiries led to the immediate arrest of Winnie Kabaare and the shamba boy, both of whom were taken into custody to assist police with ongoing investigations.
The body of the deceased was transported to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where a postmortem examination is expected to shed more light on the nature and cause of the attack.
The motive behind the killing remains unclear, and police have not yet released additional details. However, the arrest of the two individuals present in the house has raised suspicions within the community, with many demanding justice for Akakunda.
Residents described Ritah as a quiet and well-liked member of the community, and news of her violent death has left neighbors stunned and fearful. Community leaders have urged calm while encouraging anyone with relevant information to come forward and aid police investigations.
