A tourist boat which was carrying dozens of holidaymakers suddenly capsized off the Colombian coast, leaving 38 passengers along with two members of the crew stranded in the middle of the ocean.
The tourists had just arrived on Isla Barú, a popular holiday destination near the city of Cartagena, and the site of a famous 18th Century British naval victory over Spain.
The unlucky tourists were making their way back to their cruise ship, the AIDAbella, via a smaller boat when disaster struck. The boat overturned, plunging everyone on board into the water.
In a a shocking video, captured by a passenger on a nearby boat, you can see the vessel turn completely upside down as tourists are pushed into the sea.
Thankfully, all the passengers were wearing life jackets, and many were able to cling to the overturned boat.
One stranded tourist can even be seen sitting on top of the capsized boat while waiting for help to arrive.
Luckily Another small boat was in the vicinity and quickly responded, speeding over to the site in order to begin the rescue efforts.
Crew members from the assisting boat managed to pull a number of people from the water, while signalling for further help.
Among those on board were 36 German and two Austrian tourists, along with the boat’s two Colombian crew members.
Fortunately, the situation did not turn out to be a tragic one, with the Colombian Coast Guard and a troop of other nearby vessels reacting swiftly.
Rescue teams managed to save all 40 stranded people, bringing them safely to shore.
Once safely back on land, the rescued passengers were transported to a nearby port, where they received medical attention. Despite the frightening ordeal, not one of the passengers or crew members suffered any injuries.
The cause of the accident remains unclear, but authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances that led to the vessel overturning.
