The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced plans to replace several of its Members of Parliament from the Buganda region who have allegedly distanced themselves from party activities.
The development was revealed by Muwanga Kivumbi, the NUP Deputy President for Buganda, during a press conference at Parliament. Kivumbi noted that the affected legislators were given a one-month window for reconciliation and re-engagement, but none made an effort to respond or rejoin party affairs.
“You can’t claim to be part of a party yet never attend its meetings or participate in its programmes,” Kivumbi said.
The MPs named include:
- Mathias Mpuuga, former Leader of Opposition in Parliament
- Abed Bwanika (Kimanya-Kabonera Division)
- Jimmy Lwanga (Njeru Municipality)
- Twaha Kagabo (Bukoto South)
- Joyce Bagala (Mityana Woman MP)
According to party officials, these lawmakers have consistently failed to attend NUP meetings or take part in party-led initiatives over the past several months.
Kivumbi clarified that the decision to move forward without them was not rooted in personal grievances, but rather in a bid to uphold party discipline and protect the organisation’s integrity.
“Political organisations are built on structure and loyalty. You cannot use the party’s platform to get elected and later abandon its core responsibilities,” he added.
Since replacing Mpuuga as Deputy President for Buganda earlier this year, Kivumbi has called for renewed discipline and accountability within the party’s ranks—particularly as the country approaches the 2026 general elections.
The NUP says it will now begin identifying and grooming new candidates to replace the inactive MPs in the next electoral cycle.
