In a significant security operation, the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) on Monday night recovered a firearm and an assortment of military gear in Lamwo District following the arrest of a suspect during a routine night patrol.

The arrest occurred at around 8:00 PM on July 7 in Irumo Village, Ngasino Parish, located in Agoro Sub-County, when soldiers from the 1 Dumisha Brigade intercepted Okot Charles, a 24-year-old resident of the area.

During questioning, Okot led the patrol team to a concealed hideout where a cache of military-related items had been stashed. The UPDF recovered:

  • One SMG rifle (serial number 56-121201110) loaded with six rounds of ammunition
  • A bayonet
  • A UPDF-issued belt
  • A T-shirt and bonnet
  • A South Sudan military uniform

According to security officials, the arrest followed intelligence linking Okot to an earlier bar altercation in Irumo Parish, during which he allegedly returned to the scene and fired several rounds into the air with an AK-47 rifle, causing panic among residents.

The incident prompted an immediate response from UPDF soldiers on patrol, leading to his swift arrest and subsequent recovery of the illegal arms and gear.

Lt Col Mubangizi Ipolito, Commander of the 1 Dumisha Brigade, praised the local community for their vigilance and collaboration.

“We thank the people of Lamwo for the continued partnership in maintaining peace and security. The UPDF remains committed to protecting all Ugandans and their property,” Lt Col Mubangizi stated.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the firearm and military gear, and whether the suspect has any links to cross-border criminal networks or armed groups.

The recovered items are now in UPDF custody as the suspect awaits further processing and possible prosecution.
