In what locals are calling the most dramatic “resurrection” since Lazarus, a 34-year-old Ghanaian man has left an entire village in disbelief after faking his own death to avoid paying a hefty bride price — only to show up very much alive at his own funeral.
The man, identified as Yaw Kwame, a self-proclaimed entrepreneur (and part-time “crypto investor”), had been courting Afia Serwaa, a teacher from Ejisu, for over two years. But when her family recently presented a detailed bride price list — allegedly including two cows, six crates of malt, a full-size deep freezer, and a brand-new iPhone — Yaw reportedly vanished into thin air.
A week later, news broke that Yaw had tragically died in a “boat accident” on Lake Bosomtwe, despite the fact that no one in the family could recall him ever learning how to swim.
His friends organised a GoFundMe-style donation drive to “give him a dignified send-off,” and plans were underway for a lavish funeral. His “grieving” cousins even began selling customized T-shirts bearing the words “Gone Too Soon: Yaw the Bossman.”
But just as the pastor began the final prayers at the funeral service held at Bantama Presby Church, a taxi pulled up — and out stepped Yaw himself, holding a bottle of Fanta and looking very refreshed.
Eyewitnesses say mourners screamed and scattered, with one elderly aunt fainting into the casket and a group of pallbearers dropping the coffin in fear.
“We thought he was a ghost. Even his own mother ran,” said one shocked attendee. “I’ve never seen grown men jump fences like that.”
Yaw, however, was unapologetic.
“They wanted me to marry a woman and go bankrupt in one day,” he told reporters. “Deep freezer? iPhone? For what? I love Afia, but not at that expense. I had to choose between death or debt — so I chose death.”
Afia’s family has since accused Yaw of emotional manipulation, public embarrassment, and wasting perfectly good funeral food. Her uncle, Nana Kojo Antwi (not the musician), called the stunt “madness of the highest order.”
“We were ready to welcome him as a son-in-law. Now we just want him arrested,” he fumed.
Police say they’re “looking into the matter” but also admitted there’s no law against pretending to die, unless it involves insurance fraud — which in this case, Yaw hadn’t even considered.
Meanwhile, Afia has reportedly blocked Yaw on all platforms and returned to her village to “re-evaluate her taste in men.”
