The contest for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for National Female Youth Member of Parliament has taken yet another unexpected turn, with reports alleging that Ms. Nakku Fiona has shifted her support from Ms. Gold Ikyiriza to Ms. Ampaire Diana Kampe.

This development comes only hours after Nakku, who was disqualified from the race by the NRM Electoral Commission over age concerns, allegedly urged her delegates to rally behind Ikyiriza. At the time, she described Ms. Ikyiriza as the most suitable candidate to represent young people at the national level.

However, fresh reports from inside the NRM youth camp suggest that Nakku has allegedly changed course after a juicy cash swap deal, [we can’t confirm this]. According to sources close to the developments, Ms. Ampaire Diana is said to have extended millions of shillings to Nakku, prompting her to withdraw support from Ikyiriza and instead throw her weight behind Diana’s candidacy.

Sources further indicate that preparations are underway within Nakku’s network of delegates to redirect their support toward Ms. Ampaire Diana in a bid to bolster her chances.

The sudden shift has sparked confusion and debate within the NRM youth circles, with some viewing it as a normal political realignment while others have raised concerns about the influence of money in determining youth leadership.

Ms. Ikyiriza, a former Uganda National Students’ Association (UNSA) Vice President, had the entire evening gained momentum in the race following Nakku’s endorsement. Her campaign centers on youth empowerment, with strong advocacy for a dedicated Ministry of Youth and increased opportunities for the girl child.

On the other hand, Ms. Ampaire Diana Kampe, described by her supporters as a “firebrand,” has been running a campaign focused on strong grassroots mobilization and financial empowerment programs for young people.

As the primaries draw closer, Nakku’s shifting endorsements are expected to shape the balance of power among the contenders, further intensifying an already heated race.
