With just two days left to presidential nominations, the Electoral Commission (EC) has officially cleared President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) chairman, to contest in the 2026 general elections.
The EC confirmed that President Museveni met all the legal requirements, including submitting the requisite number of supporter signatures from at least two-thirds of Uganda’s districts. This clearance paves the way for his nomination on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at the EC’s new headquarters in Lweza-Lubowa, Entebbe.
Following his nomination, President Museveni will proceed to Kololo Ceremonial Grounds for a grand Nomination Rally, where he is expected to outline his vision under the theme “Protecting the Gains.” NRM members, supporters, and the general public have been invited to attend what is expected to be a massive show of support for the party’s flagbearer.
Speaking ahead of the event, Hon. Dr. Nansubuga Rosemary Sseninde, NRM’s Director of Mobilisation, Recruitment, and Cadre Development, urged Ugandans to turn up in large numbers:
“This is a historic moment for our country as we once again prepare to entrust President Museveni with the mandate to consolidate the progress we have made. We call upon all party members and well-wishers to come and celebrate this milestone with us at Kololo.”
The presidential campaigns will officially kick off on September 29, 2025, giving candidates ample time to engage voters across the country before polls open next year.
President Museveni, who has led Uganda through decades of relative stability and economic transformation, is expected to highlight the NRM’s achievements in infrastructure development, social services, and national security while unveiling plans for the next five years.
NRM Secretariat officials have promised a colourful and peaceful event, with strict adherence to security and traffic guidelines to ensure a smooth experience for all attendees.
