The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have today commenced security patrols in Kampala as part of broader efforts to ensure peace, safety, and stability ahead of the forthcoming general elections. Authorities have emphasized that the deployments are purely precautionary and that there is no cause for alarm.
Confirming the development, the army’s Acting Spokesperson, Colonel Chris Magezi, said the patrols are intended to reassure the public and safeguard both lives and property during the sensitive election period. He noted that the UPDF is working closely with the Uganda Police Force to maintain law and order across the capital.
“These patrols are meant to ensure that everyone is safe and assured,” Colonel Magezi said, adding that public and private property will be kept secure at all times. He stressed that any acts of criminality or threats to public order will be dealt with promptly and strictly in accordance with the laws of Uganda.
The increased security presence comes as Uganda prepares for general elections scheduled for Thursday, 15 January 2026, during which citizens will elect the President and Members of Parliament. In support of broad civic participation, President Yoweri Museveni has declared January 15 and 16 as public holidays to allow voters ample time to take part in the democratic exercise.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has intensified preparations nationwide, including the dispatch of voting materials to various regions, underscoring the scale and importance of the electoral process involving millions of registered voters.
Colonel Magezi reiterated that security agencies will not tolerate violence, intimidation, or disorder linked to political actors or their supporters. However, he assured Ugandans that the UPDF remains firmly committed to upholding the rule of law while protecting democratic freedoms.
“We do not take threats of violence lightly,” he said. “Working alongside the police, our objective is to make sure everyone is safe and assured.”
The UPDF’s proactive approach has been welcomed by many residents as a reassurance of stability, reinforcing confidence that the election period will proceed in a peaceful, orderly, and secure environment.
