Deadly Operation: UPDF ‘Silences’ Four Armed Warriors, Seizes Rifle & Ammunition

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 5 Infantry Division has recovered more than 30 herds of cattle following a coordinated security operation in parts of East Acholi aimed at curbing cattle rustling and restoring stability in the region.

The operation, conducted under the wider security campaign code-named Dumisha Usalama, took place between Monday, February 2, and Wednesday, February 4, 2026. It covered the general areas of Lokokwai in Kitgum District, Amita Village in Abim District, and Loborom Village in Agago District.

According to the UPDF, the three-day operation resulted in the neutralisation of four armed Karamojong warriors. Troops also recovered one AK-47 rifle with three rounds of ammunition, bows and arrows, as well as three mobile phones believed to have been used to coordinate cattle raids.

The Commander of the 5 Infantry Division, Maj Gen Keith Katungyi, said the operation was part of sustained efforts to eliminate cattle rustling and protect communities within the division’s area of responsibility.

He assured residents that the UPDF would maintain a strong security presence to deter criminal activity, noting that heightened vigilance by the forces had ensured that no livestock was stolen during the operation.

“All animals in the affected areas were secured without loss,” Maj Gen Katungyi said, adding that continued patrols and intelligence-led operations would remain in place.

The UPDF reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining security operations aimed at maintaining peace and stability in East Acholi, an area that has previously experienced cross-border cattle rustling and related insecurity.

Military officials say such operations are crucial in protecting livelihoods, promoting coexistence among communities, and supporting broader development efforts in the region.
