Kalungu East Member of Parliament-elect Yusuf Junior Kiruuta, popularly known as Nkerettanyi, has appeared before the Buganda Road Magistrates Court over allegations of theft and receiving stolen property.
The 29-year-old legislator, who recently defeated former Agriculture Minister Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja in the 2026 parliamentary elections, is accused of allegedly receiving curtains valued at Shs3.7 billion that were reportedly stolen.
According to the prosecution, Kiruuta is alleged to have received and retained twelve rolls of curtain material at Eagle Plaza in Kampala’s Central Division between 2018 and January 2022, while knowing or having reason to believe that the items were stolen. The prosecution told court that the curtains belong to businessman Hajji Sulaiman Lwabuuka Kisuule.
Kiruuta has been charged alongside four other accused persons: businessman John Tamale of Kiwanga Jomayi in Seeta, Mukono District; Ivan Zziwa of Namugongo Mbalwa; Hamza Mugumya, a shop attendant from Bulwadda Cell in Matuga, Wakiso District; and Shamirah Nakacwa Muliika, a housewife from Bweya in Kajjansi Town Council.
Nakacwa is accused of allegedly stealing the curtains, which were later allegedly received by her co-accused. Court records indicate that the case dates back to December 2024, when investigations into the alleged theft commenced. Nakacwa was reportedly the first suspect to be arrested, with the remaining accused apprehended as inquiries progressed.
The complainant told court that Nakacwa, who is his wife, allegedly facilitated the theft by switching off CCTV cameras that could have captured the incident.
Kiruuta denied all the charges, and his co-accused also pleaded not guilty. The court granted Kiruuta bail and adjourned the matter to March 9, 2026, for further hearing.
