State House has dismissed as false and misleading widespread claims circulating across multiple online platforms and social media pages alleging that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Major General (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire, Ms Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, and Major General (Rtd) Jim Muhwezi to the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) as “historicals.”
The claims, which have been widely shared and republished by several online outlets and individuals, were officially rebutted by the Presidential Press Secretary, Mr Walusimbi Sandor, who clarified that no such appointments have been made and that the reports are entirely false.
“Claims circulating in an online publication that H.E. the President has appointed individuals to the CEC of the NRM as ‘historicals’ are false. No such official communication has been issued,” Sandor said.
He stressed that any decisions affecting the leadership or structure of the ruling party are always communicated through formal and verifiable State House and NRM channels, not anonymous sources or speculative online reports.
Fabricated Narrative, No Legal Basis
Political observers and party insiders have also questioned the credibility of the claims, noting that the NRM constitution does not provide for ad hoc appointment of ‘historicals’ to the Central Executive Committee.
CEC membership follows clear constitutional provisions, including elections, regional representation, and formally designated offices. Analysts say the story appears to be a manufactured narrative, amplified through digital platforms without verification.
“The danger with such stories is that repetition creates false legitimacy,” a senior party official noted. “But constitutionally and procedurally, the claims do not stand.”
Warning Against Political Disinformation
State House used the opportunity to caution the public and media practitioners against amplifying unverified political information, especially at a time when internal party processes are under close public scrutiny.
Ugandans have been urged to rely on official statements from State House, the NRM Secretariat, and accredited spokespersons for accurate and authoritative information.
