Just In: UPDF Announces Death Of D/Commander Of Land Forces Maj. Gen. Francis Takirwa

Uganda’s Deputy Commander of Land Forces, Maj. Gen. Francis Takirwa, has died after a period of illness, security sources said on Friday. The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is expected to issue an official statement later.

Maj. Gen. Takirwa joined the army in 1989 and served in the UPDF for more than three decades, holding several command and staff positions. At the time of his death, he was the Deputy Commander of Land Forces. He previously commanded the UPDF Second Division based in Mbarara and also served as Chief of Education, Sports and Culture.

He was part of the Ugandan contingent deployed to Somalia under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) between 2011 and 2012.

Born in 1965 in Mbarara District, western Uganda, Takirwa rose through the ranks and undertook professional military training in Uganda, Tanzania, China, Egypt and South Africa.

Colleagues described him as a professional officer with a long record of service in the UPDF.

The army is expected to release further details, including the cause of death and funeral arrangements.
