Sudhir Ruparelia: “My Main Motive Is to Create Jobs, Not More Wealth”

By Frank Kamuntu

Ugandan billionaire and investor Sudhir Ruparelia has revealed that the driving force behind his continued investments is not the pursuit of personal wealth, but the desire to create employment opportunities for thousands of Ugandans.

Speaking during an interview on RadioWalla, the businessman explained that job creation has remained at the heart of his investment decisions throughout his career, even after achieving significant financial success.

Sudhir made the remarks while responding to a question about why he continues to expand his business empire despite already being one of Uganda’s wealthiest individuals.

“My main motive is to create jobs. Society out there needs jobs,” he said.

His response drew applause from members of the audience, many of whom viewed the statement as a reflection of the broader economic role played by private sector investors.

According to Sudhir, business success should be measured not only by profits but also by the number of livelihoods created and supported through investment. He noted that large-scale projects have the potential to provide employment directly and indirectly across multiple sectors of the economy.

The billionaire also used the interview to reflect on some of the investment decisions that shaped his business journey, particularly his early acquisitions of land in Munyonyo.

Sharing a personal story, he recalled purchasing land in the area years ago when its future potential was not obvious to many people. At the time, he said, even members of his own family questioned the wisdom of the investment.

Sudhir recounted how his son, who was only five years old at the time, jokingly expressed concern that he was spending too much money on land and risking the family’s finances.

Looking back, he said the investment proved to be one of the most significant decisions of his career as Munyonyo later developed into one of Kampala’s most prestigious and valuable locations.

Today, the area hosts several landmark developments associated with the Ruparelia Group, including Speke Resort Munyonyo, the Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort, and the International Conference Centre. These facilities have played a major role in positioning Munyonyo as a leading destination for tourism, hospitality, international events, and business conferences.

Sudhir said successful investing often requires patience, long-term thinking, and the ability to identify opportunities before they become obvious to everyone else.

His remarks offered insight into the mindset that has guided the growth of the Ruparelia Group over the decades, transforming it into one of the largest privately owned business conglomerates in East Africa.

Beyond financial returns, Sudhir maintained that the greatest satisfaction comes from seeing businesses create jobs, support communities, and contribute to national economic development.
