Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba Inspects Kampala’s Road Rehabilitation Progress

By Caroline Kanshabe

Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Special Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, undertook his second visit today to assess the ongoing road rehabilitation efforts in Kampala’s Central Business District.

The inspection aimed to gauge the current initiatives to upgrade the city’s infrastructure, with a specific emphasis on major roads impacted by potholes.

Upon his arrival in Kampala, Gen Muhoozi was warmly welcomed at Kiyembe Lane by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director, Dorothy Kisaka, and Engineer David Luyimbazi, the KCCA Deputy Executive Director, along with other KCCA engineers.

The visit began with a tour of the renovated Kiyembe traders’ lane, where local traders expressed their appreciation for the enhanced infrastructure.

Last month, the Special Forces Command’s (SFC) Construction Regiment launched a plan to address the pothole issue, targeting 19,324 square meters (approximately 3 kilometers) in the Central Division. The ambitious completion timeline is set for mid-December 2023.

Major roads slated for rehabilitation include Prince Charles Drive, Elizabeth Avenue, Wampewo Avenue, John Babiha, Lower and Upper Kololo Terraces, Impala Avenue, Nile Avenue, Colville, Kimathi Avenue, and Kiyembe Lane, among others.

The focus extends beyond patching potholes to conducting comprehensive reconstruction of the sub-base, base, and the wearing course, the upper layer of the roadway.

During the inspection, SFC engineers provided insights into the progress made so far, acknowledging the challenges posed by continuous rainfall.

The unfavorable weather conditions have impeded construction efforts.

As Gen Muhoozi traversed downtown Kampala, a crowd gathered along the streets and balconies, expressing their enthusiasm by waving at him.

He walked along Luwum Street, William Street, and Wilson Street before proceeding to Old Kampala and Kololo.

Despite the weather-induced obstacles, Gen Muhoozi remained hopeful about the project’s significance in enhancing the city’s infrastructure and ensuring a smoother commuting experience for residents.

The commitment to revitalizing Kampala’s roads reflects a broader initiative to elevate the city’s urban landscape, underscoring the government’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.
