Lucky Ariho Rwabuturumba, a fourth-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery student, has been elected the 37th Guild President of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).
Ariho, who ran under the banner of the National Unity Platform (NUP), secured a decisive victory with 2,150 votes. He triumphed over his closest rival, Henry Ssebyatika of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), a second-year Bachelor of Science with Education student, who garnered 1,451 votes.
The outcome was met with jubilant celebrations from NUP supporters, marking yet another milestone for the opposition party within university politics.
In a congratulatory message shared on social media, NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, widely known as Bobi Wine, praised Ariho’s win and offered a word of caution.
“Congratulations, comrade Lucky Ariho, upon your victory as Guild President of MUST! Thank you for carrying the NUP flag with courage and pride,” Kyagulanyi wrote. “Now that you have won, please be on your guard against the many traps that will be laid for you to betray the people’s struggle for freedom. I charge you to remain vigilant at all times!”
Kyagulanyi also lauded the efforts of the party’s Western Uganda leadership, particularly Deputy President Jolly Jacklyn Tukamushaba and the NUP Institutions team, for delivering what he described as “a great result.”
With his victory, Ariho becomes part of a growing movement of student leaders whose voices are shaping the political narrative in Uganda, particularly within the opposition.
