Pope Leo XIII Makes First Changes In Ugandan Catholic Church

By Our Reporter

Pope Leo XIV has reassigned Archbishop Luigi Bianco, the Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, marking the end of his five-year diplomatic and ecclesiastical mission in the country. Archbishop Bianco will now take up new responsibilities as the Apostolic Nuncio to Slovenia and Apostolic Delegate to Kosovo.

Appointed to Uganda in 2019, Archbishop Bianco served as the Pope’s representative, acting as a vital link between the Holy See and both the Ugandan government and the local Catholic Church. During his tenure, he played a key role in nurturing diplomatic relations and strengthening the Church’s presence and activities across the country.

His new appointment reflects the Vatican’s continued trust in his leadership and diplomatic skill. In Slovenia and Kosovo, he will undertake dual responsibilities—both as a formal diplomatic envoy and a liaison to the Catholic communities in the region.

The Vatican has not yet announced a successor to Archbishop Bianco, leaving the Ugandan Catholic community in a period of anticipation as it awaits the appointment of a new Apostolic Nuncio.

Throughout his time in Uganda, Archbishop Bianco was known for his calm diplomatic demeanor, commitment to pastoral collaboration, and support for the mission of the Church in various spheres including education, healthcare, and peacebuilding.

As he transitions to his new post, Archbishop Bianco leaves behind a legacy of bridge-building and faithful service. Church leaders in Uganda have expressed gratitude for his work and wished him well in his new assignment.

The next Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda will inherit the important task of continuing to foster strong ties between the Holy See, the local Church, and the Ugandan state—at a time when faith remains central to national identity and community life.
