The International Crimes Division of the High Court has handed down a lengthy prison sentence to Tukwasibwe Junior, a teacher from Kabale, for sexually abusing six of his own students.
Justice Richard Wejuli Wabwire last Friday found Tukwasibwe guilty on multiple serious charges including aggravated trafficking in children, aggravated defilement, rape, and operating a children’s home without a valid license. The court sentenced him to a total of 46 years in prison, with all sentences running concurrently.
According to the judgment, Tukwasibwe, who is in his 30s, used deception and manipulation to sexually exploit vulnerable girls aged between 14 and 16. The court heard that he operated a children’s home in Gaaju Cell, Nyabikoni Ward, Central Division, Kabale, from 2013 to 2018 under the guise of providing care for vulnerable girls.
However, the prosecution revealed that the children’s home was a cover for his criminal acts, as he abused the trust placed in him to prey on his students.
Justice Wabwire condemned Tukwasibwe’s actions, emphasizing the gravity of betraying the safety of children entrusted to his care. “The accused shamelessly used the platform meant to protect children as a vehicle to commit heinous sexual offenses,” the judge stated.
Under the ruling, Tukwasibwe will serve 46 years for defilement, 30 years for aggravated trafficking, and an additional 46 years for rape, with the sentences to run concurrently.
This landmark case highlights ongoing concerns about child protection and the need for strict oversight of institutions claiming to care for vulnerable children. Authorities have been urged to strengthen licensing and monitoring systems to prevent abuse in such settings.
The ruling is a stern warning to perpetrators who exploit positions of trust to victimize minors and underscores the justice system’s commitment to safeguarding children from sexual violence.
