Police have arrested a young woman believed to have been the last person seen with Dr. John Spire Kiggundu, a prominent Ugandan laparoscopic surgeon whose lifeless body was discovered under unclear circumstances at Dream Guest House in Lubowa, along Entebbe Road.
The suspect, Eva Mbabazi, believed to be in her early 20s, was picked up by authorities following growing speculation on social media linking her to the doctor’s final moments. According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango, Dr. Kiggundu checked into the guest house at approximately 5:45 PM on June 21, 2025. His body was found less than an hour later, alone in the same room.
“CCTV footage shows the suspect leaving the room that had earlier been booked by the deceased,” SSP Onyango confirmed. “We have recorded her statement, and a general inquiry file has been submitted to the state attorney for further guidance.”
Dr. Kiggundu, who until his death served as President of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Uganda (ALSU), is believed to have died from a heart attack, although police investigations are still ongoing to confirm the precise cause and surrounding circumstances.
Mbabazi’s arrest comes amid widespread speculation and online chatter, with some social media users alleging she may have played a role in the incident. Police, however, have urged the public to refrain from spreading rumors, emphasizing the importance of waiting for official findings.
“We appeal to the public to let investigations take their course. Premature speculation can compromise justice,” SSP Onyango stated.
The late Dr. Kiggundu was a respected figure in Uganda’s medical fraternity, known for pioneering advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques and mentoring dozens of young surgeons. News of his sudden and mysterious death has sent shockwaves through the health sector, with many calling for a thorough and transparent investigation.
Authorities are expected to release additional details once the post-mortem report and forensic investigations are complete. The suspect remains in custody pending further action from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
