Pictorial: See Who’s Winning Where In NRM Primaries As Social Media Exposes The Losers

By Frank Kamuntu

As the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) holds its internal primaries today to select party flag bearers for the 2026 parliamentary elections, Uganda’s internet has found a different kind of winner — memes.

The party’s traditional voting style — where supporters physically line up behind their preferred candidates — has taken on a life of its own online, triggering a meme explosion across social media platforms.

What was meant to be a show of political support has become an unexpected comedy parade. Viral images show some candidates standing completely alone, with not a single supporter behind them — a visual that has sparked endless jokes and laughter from Ugandans online.

“This election has turned into a national heartbreak festival,” one X (formerly Twitter) user posted, sharing a photo of a candidate solemnly staring into the distance with a dry queue behind them, empty.

Others have compared the lonely lines to failed love confessions, quoting lyrics, writing breakup tweets, or joking that the candidates “just wanted to check the weather.”

Despite the serious nature of the primaries — which will determine who carries the NRM flag into the 2026 elections — Ugandans have shown their unmatched ability to turn any moment into comedy gold.

Political analysts may be focusing on voter turnout, regional dynamics, and future implications, but for many on social media, it’s the photos and memes that are dominating the day’s narrative.

Whether your candidate emerges victorious or not, one thing is certain: the humor sparked by today’s NRM lining-up primaries will outlast the headlines and live on in Uganda’s meme archives.
