Jet Tumwebaze has reportedly stirred political controversy following his recent statements regarding Hon. Aine Sodo Kaguta, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for Mawogola North in Sembabule District. Tumwebaze, a lawyer, had earlier suggested that Hon. Sodo was qualified to represent Uganda in the East African Legislative Assembly, citing his pass in Kiswahili as evidence of his suitability. However, in a surprising turn of events, Tumwebaze has allegedly petitioned the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) to verify claims that Hon. Sodo failed both his Ordinary and Advanced Level examinations. This reversal has prompted questions about whether Tumwebaze’s actions stem from genuine concern over qualifications or from political maneuvering.
Observers note that Tumwebaze’s position appears inconsistent. Having initially defended Hon. Sodo’s academic record, he is now reportedly questioning it. Such a shift has been interpreted by some as political opportunism rather than a sincere contribution to public discourse. Residents of Mawogola North, however, are said to be more concerned with practical leadership issues—such as poverty reduction, infrastructure, and service delivery—than with academic debates.
Additionally, Tumwebaze has allegedly sought to link Hon. Sodo’s political standing to his family background, reportedly questioning his relationship with the First Family and making claims about his alleged behavior. These allegations remain unverified. Supporters of Hon. Sodo describe him as a humble and approachable leader who has consistently served the people of Mawogola North. They argue that his family ties should not be used as a political weapon, emphasizing that every Ugandan citizen, regardless of background, has the constitutional right to seek elective office.
Political analysts suggest that attempts to discredit Hon. Sodo by drawing attention to his familial connections may be intended to create division and confusion among voters. In Uganda’s democratic system, all eligible citizens—including those related to prominent figures—have the right to participate in elections. Tumwebaze has also reportedly tried to associate his political campaign with senior NRM figures such as Hon. Shartsi Musherure and Hon. Sam Kutesa, though these associations remain unconfirmed.
While Tumwebaze’s legal background is well known, critics claim that his political tactics—allegedly involving contradictory statements and unverified allegations—raise concerns about his leadership approach. They argue that focusing on integrity, service delivery, and development would be more beneficial to voters than engaging in personal disputes.
In contrast, Hon. Aine Sodo Kaguta is credited by supporters with implementing community development projects, including reported initiatives such as the construction of dams for farmers, providing bursaries for students, and supporting widows and orphans. Residents who back him say these efforts demonstrate his commitment to improving livelihoods at the grassroots level.
As the election period approaches, political analysts predict that voters in Mawogola North will prioritize tangible development over political wrangling. Whether Tumwebaze’s recent statements will influence public opinion remains to be seen. For now, Hon. Sodo continues to campaign on a platform of service and development, while Tumwebaze faces growing scrutiny over his shifting positions.
