A tragic road accident claimed the lives of seven members of the same family in the early hours of Saturday, December 27, on the Masaka–Mbarara Highway in Lwengo District.
The crash occurred at around 4:30 a.m. at Njagalakasayi Village and involved a Toyota Fielder, registration number UBH 476W, and a Fuso Fighter truck, registration number UBP 510V. Preliminary investigations suggest the Toyota Fielder, traveling from Masaka toward Mbarara, attempted to overtake a queue of vehicles and collided head-on with the oncoming Fuso truck.
All seven occupants of the Toyota Fielder died at the scene. According to the Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Twaha Kasirye, the victims were a man, his wife, their four children, and the man’s brother. The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially released, pending notification of their next of kin.
“The impact was fatal. Four occupants died instantly, and during rescue operations, three more bodies were retrieved from the vehicle, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven,” SP Kasirye said.
Traffic police responded promptly, securing the scene and restoring traffic flow along the highway. Both vehicles have been towed to the police station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles, while the victims’ bodies were conveyed to Masaka City Mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Police suspect reckless driving as the cause of the crash, although investigations are ongoing. SP Kasirye urged motorists to drive responsibly, observe traffic regulations, and exercise extra caution, particularly during the festive season.
