Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić stated that the Criminal Police Directorate carried out an operation in the vicinity of Kruševac today and seized around five tonnes of marijuana, a record seizure of drugs.
According to him, in this outstanding operation by the Criminal Police Directorate, in addition to marijuana, four automatic rifles and one hand-held launcher – zolja – were also seized.
He specified that N. S. (1986) and R. S. were arrested (1958), while one person is being sought on reasonable suspicion of having committed the criminal offences of unauthorised production and distribution of drugs and unauthorised production, possession, carrying and distribution of weapons and explosives.
The Deputy Prime Minister, stating the magnitude of the seizure, pointed out that in 2001, the amount of drugs seized in one year was slightly more than one tonne, and last year, which was statistically good, six tonnes of drugs were seized.
Dačić said that, according to the data available, the price of marijuana ranges from €1,500 to €2,000 per kilogram, which means that the value of the seized drugs is from €7 million to €10 million.
A significant result of this action is that we removed these five tonnes of drugs from the streets and saved children from poisoning, because, in addition to the European market, this marijuana was most likely intended for the domestic market, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasised, noting that the fight against illegal drug trafficking is a priority for the police.
