Hon. Asuman Basalirwa, a prominent Ugandan politician and Member of Parliament for Bugiri Municipality, has sparked mixed reactions after making a humorous but controversial comment about his domestic life.
In a recent interview on NBS TV, Basalirwa revealed that he cannot cook, iron, or wash clothes, and he jokingly stated that his wives have no choice but to look after him “like a baby.”
Basalirwa, who is also the president of the Justice Forum (JEEMA) party, explained that his upbringing played a big role in his lack of household skills.
Coming from a large family with 25 members, most of whom were girls, he shared that he was “spoiled” as a child. He was raised in a way that he didn’t have to learn domestic chores, as matron staff at his boarding school took care of washing his uniforms.
As he grew older, he continued to rely on others to take care of his personal chores, even becoming a prefect at school and having fellow students wash his clothes for him.
In a lighthearted manner, Basalirwa admitted, “I can’t wash, cook and iron, that’s why my wives have no choice but to look after me like a baby.”
His comment, which he made while laughing with the host, appears to be a playful take on traditional gender roles within his household.
However, it also raises questions about his views on domestic responsibilities, with some viewers interpreting the statement as humorous, while others may find it controversial or provocative.
Basalirwa is known for his outspoken personality and often stirs debates with his bold opinions. His comments about domestic tasks reflect a traditional perspective where he relies on his wives to take care of his personal needs, which has sparked a wide range of reactions from the public.
