A tragic road accident involving the convoy of Balaam Barugahara, Uganda’s State Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, has claimed the life of a boda boda rider and left two members of his team injured.
The incident occurred on Thursday, July 17, in Kagadi District, as the minister was en route to Fort Portal to attend the Tooro Kingdom Annual Youth Conference.
Minister Balaam confirmed the accident in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) and expressed gratitude for surviving the crash.
“Thank God for His mercy. Our car was involved in a horrific accident in Kagadi on our way to Fort Portal… I’m grateful for our driver’s quick thinking and skillful manoeuvres that saved us. Sadly, a boda boda rider lost his life, and two of our people were injured,” he wrote.
The minister extended his condolences to the family of the deceased rider and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
A disturbing image from the accident scene shows the minister’s vehicle severely damaged and mounted atop the boda boda motorcycle — a grim reflection of the impact.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the injured or the deceased. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
The accident has sparked fresh conversations on road safety, especially concerning government convoys and boda boda riders, who remain among the most vulnerable road users in Uganda.
Minister Balaam, known for his involvement in youth mobilization and events, was scheduled to address hundreds of young people from the Tooro sub-region at the annual youth gathering.
