A Peruvian bishop accused of secretly maintaining relationships with 17 women has resigned after his affairs were reportedly uncovered by his cleaning lady.
Ciro Quispe López, 51, the Bishop of Juli in southern Peru, tendered his resignation following a Vatican investigation that exposed his alleged romantic entanglements. Reports suggest that some of the women nearly came to blows after discovering his double life.
According to Peruvian journalist Paola Ugaz, the scandal erupted after a nun—one of López’s alleged lovers—grew jealous of another woman, a lawyer also involved with the bishop. The nun reportedly leaked information about López’s affairs to a third lover, leading to a confrontation between the women.
“It was like a real-life soap opera but also revealed a serious abuse of power,” Ugaz told The Times, adding that many of the women were too afraid to speak out because they feared the bishop.
The scandal came to light when López allegedly sent intimate photos and videos intended for one of his mistresses to his cleaner by mistake. The cleaner subsequently filed a formal complaint with church authorities, triggering the Vatican probe.
Investigators reportedly reviewed explicit messages, photos, and voice notes exchanged between López and his alleged lovers.
Despite the mounting evidence, the disgraced cleric has denied all accusations, calling them part of a “defamation campaign” orchestrated by “dark hands.”
López is also under investigation for alleged embezzlement of church funds. He is accused of diverting church property—including chairs—to furnish a chicken restaurant chain he reportedly has a stake in. The business, named Patas Arriba (“Upside Down” or literally “Legs in the Air”), has further fueled the controversy.
The Vatican accepted his resignation early last month—more than two decades before the standard retirement age for bishops, which is 75.
