Three police officers attached to Busia border have been arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court on charges of abuse of office, aiding a prisoner to escape, and conspiracy to defeat justice.
The officers were jointly charged following investigations conducted by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SH-ACU), working in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
Those charged are AIP Kali Godfrey, CPL Owiny Peter (No. 48527), and CPL Odul Oscar (No. 47882). At the time of the alleged offences, the officers were deployed with Interpol and the terrorism tactical unit at Busia Customs Office.
According to the prosecution, between 22 and 23 December 2025, the officers abused their authority by engaging in arbitrary acts that enabled the escape of Kasule Najib, a suspect who had been intercepted at the Uganda–Kenya border.
Kasule Najib is described as a key suspect in a major gold scam currently under investigation by the SH-ACU, in which an American national was allegedly defrauded of more than USD 840,000.
The court heard that the officers’ actions undermined lawful investigations and obstructed the course of justice by facilitating the suspect’s escape while in custody.
The three officers were remanded until 21 January 2025 as investigations and prosecution continue.
Authorities say the arraignment underscores the government’s commitment to fighting corruption and abuse of office within law enforcement agencies, particularly at critical entry points such as border posts.
