There was confusion at Lubaga Cathedral in Kampala on Easter Sunday when a man was arrested for pretending to be a Catholic priest.
The man, identified as Peter Mutebi, was caught during the Easter mass, which was being led by Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere.
Mutebi arrived at the cathedral dressed like a real priest.
He tried to join the clergy in the sacred area during the service.
However, his actions raised suspicions among church officials and security officers.
They noticed that something was not right with his behavior and outfit.
Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere was quickly informed about the suspicious man.
He decided to speak to Mutebi directly in front of other priests.
In a video shared by journalist Michael Kakumirizi, the Archbishop can be seen seriously questioning the man. The Archbishop asked him why he was pretending to be a priest and warned him that such behavior is dangerous and wrong.
“You think this Church is for jokes?” the Archbishop asked firmly.
His message was clear — the Catholic Church takes its leadership and responsibilities seriously and will not allow anyone to impersonate its clergy.
Security officers at the cathedral arrested Mutebi and took him away for further questioning.
The faithful who had gathered for the important Easter celebration were surprised by the incident.
Many were concerned that someone could try to fake being a priest during such a holy day.
Church officials later said that every priest in the Catholic Church is known and registered.
They encouraged church members to stay alert and report any person who seems suspicious.
The officials also thanked the security team for their quick action in handling the matter.
The video of the Archbishop confronting the suspect has since been shared widely on social media.
Many people praised the Archbishop for his firm response and for protecting the church.
Police are expected to continue investigations and take appropriate legal action against Mutebi.
It is not yet clear what his intentions were or how many times he may have done this before.
The Catholic Church leadership in Kampala has promised to strengthen security in all churches, especially during major events, to ensure the safety of all believers.
