Reports from Ntungamo indicate that tycoon Apollo Nyegamahe (Aponye), who is also Chairman NRM Rukiga District, died in a fatal accident at Itojo on the Kabale-Mbarara Highway Thursday evening.

The deceased businessman was being chauffered in a Land Cruiser registration number UBF 300Z with a yet-to-identified person who sustained serious injuries.

In a statement by the Rwizi regional spokesperson Samson Kasasira, preliminary investigations indicate that ill-fated vehicle registration UBF 300Z that was headed to Kabale side rammed into a stationary motor truck UAZ 767D FUSO that was parked due to a mechanical problem alongside the road in Itojo.

His body was conveyed to Itojo hospital mortuary and the rest of the occupants were rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.

Aponye owned a string of businesses under the company name, Aponye Uganda Limited with interests in real estate and produce, among others.

He is also the owner of Aponye Mall in downtown Kampala, Mega Standard Supermarket as well as Aponye Mall in Ntinda.

He was one of the major suppliers of COVID-19 relief food, sparking controversy on how he was picked for the job but also put on the spotlight for supplying poor-quality food to Ugandans.
