As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to redefine industries, education systems, healthcare, governance and the future of work, Victoria University Vice Chancellor Dr. Lawrence Muganga is preparing to launch a new book that he says is designed to help Africans navigate, and lead the technological revolution.
Titled Wake Up or Be Left Behind, the book will officially be launched on Monday, July 13, with Muganga describing it as both a wake-up call and a practical guide for individuals, businesses, educators and policymakers seeking to remain relevant in the AI era.
The renowned education reform advocate believes artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept but a present-day reality already influencing nearly every aspect of daily life.
“In the time it takes to watch this, the world will change. Most people will not notice. I am going to make sure you do,” Muganga says in a promotional video released ahead of the launch.
He notes that AI is already embedded in technologies people use every day from smartphones and banking systems to hospitals and classrooms.
“Right now, machines are learning to think. They are already in your phone, your bank, your hospital, your children’s school.”
According to Muganga, humanity now stands at a defining crossroads.
“Some people will ride this wave and rise. Others will be swept away by it. The difference between them is simple. One of them understands what is coming. The other does not.”
For years, Muganga has championed competency-based education, digital transformation and innovation across Uganda’s higher education sector. He says the inspiration behind the book came from watching critical technological decisions affecting Africa being made elsewhere, often without African voices at the table.
“For years, I have watched the future be decided far from here for people like us, without people like us. I decided that stops now.”
He says he poured years of research, experience and insight into the publication.
“So I wrote everything I know into one book, and on the 13th of July, I am giving it to the world.”
Rather than portraying artificial intelligence as a danger, Muganga argues that understanding the technology is the key to unlocking its opportunities.
“People fear artificial intelligence. I understand why. But fear will not save you. Understanding will. This book will not tell you to be afraid. It will show you how to lead.”
Dr Muganga argues that governments, universities, entrepreneurs and young people must actively participate in creating AI-powered solutions tailored to Africa’s unique challenges and opportunities.
Throughout the book, Muganga explores how artificial intelligence is transforming education, employment, entrepreneurship, leadership, governance and economic development.
He argues that success in the coming decades will depend less on luck and more on knowledge.
“These are the only two futures left. Which one you get is not decided by luck. It is decided by what you know and when you know it.”
He believes the next generation stands to benefit enormously if today’s leaders make the right decisions.
“If we get this right, this child inherits the greatest century in history.”
For Muganga, the book represents more than a personal achievement, it is an invitation for Africans everywhere to embrace change and become architects of the future.
The launch comes at a time when artificial intelligence has emerged as one of the defining technologies of the 21st century.
Experts have revealed that AI is already fundamentally reshaping economies, labour markets and education systems, while also transforming healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing and public service delivery. Although concerns remain about job displacement, ethics and regulation, many analysts argue that countries investing early in AI literacy and innovation will be better positioned to compete globally.
Against this backdrop, Wake Up or Be Left Behind seeks to place Africa firmly within the global AI conversation, encouraging readers to move beyond fear and embrace the opportunities presented by one of the most transformative technologies of the modern age.
