Mystery Deepens In Dr. Spire Kiggundu’s Death: Woman Who Left Him In Lubowa Guest House Finally Breaks Silence After Arrest

Eva Mbabazi, the young woman at the center of the investigation into the death of renowned gynecologist Dr. John Spire Kiggundu, has spoken out for the first time since her high-profile arrest, firmly denying any involvement in the circumstances that led to his sudden demise.

Dr. Kiggundu, the founder of Henrob Hospital and a respected figure in Uganda’s medical community, was found dead at Dream Guest House in Lubowa on June 21, barely an hour after checking in at 5:45 PM. CCTV footage later showed Mbabazi, believed to be in her early 20s, leaving the same room he had booked alone.

Following days of online speculation and mounting public curiosity, police apprehended Mbabazi. However, speaking through her lawyer, she offered a different version of events. According to her statement, the meeting with the doctor was purely professional and brief.

“I was there for a short discussion. I had no idea he was unwell,” she said via her legal representative.

Her remarks align with what Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango described as full cooperation with investigators. Police have since recorded her statement and submitted the file to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review.

“We are awaiting guidance on whether she has a case to answer and what charges, if any, should be filed,” Onyango confirmed.

Preliminary investigations suggest Dr. Kiggundu may have succumbed to a heart attack, but law enforcement has not ruled out the possibility of foul play. The results of the full autopsy have not yet been made public.

The case has drawn widespread attention, partly due to Dr. Kiggundu’s influence in the health sector and the mystery surrounding the events leading to his death. His brother, cartoonist and public intellectual Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, has publicly called for calm and restraint as the legal process unfolds.

“Let the investigators do their work. Speculation only causes more pain,” Ssentongo said in a social media post.

As Uganda awaits the DPP’s decision, the case continues to stir debate across social platforms and in medical circles, with many calling for thorough and transparent handling of the matter.

For now, the woman once thought to hold the answers to Dr. Kiggundu’s final moments insists on her innocence — as police dig deeper into a case that has captivated the nation.
