Panic gripped Obalende, Lagos, Nigeria as an unidentified cable thief met a gruesome fate after being electrocuted while attempting to steal from a live transformer platform near the late Chief Odogwu’s building, beside the Police Microfinance Bank.
Residents woke up to a horrifying scene—his lifeless body of the cable thief frozen in place, clutching a vandalized cable. Witnesses say the thief likely scaled the fence at midnight, unaware that the transformer was still active and serving parts of the community.
One eyewitness, Suraju, revealed, “These so-called scavengers are nothing but criminals in disguise. They pretend to collect empty bottles at night, but their real target is government infrastructure. This one thought the demolition of Obalende Police Barracks meant the transformers were dead—he was wrong.”
Authorities arrived to find the cable thief with a bag full of tools, beverage cans, and torchlights—confirming his intent to vandalize.
As crowds swarmed the scene, no one could identify the man. Suraju has now called on the Lagos State Government to ban nighttime scavenging and truck pushers, warning that they are the masterminds behind the rampant destruction of public utilities.
