Bobi Wine Fumes Venom Over ‘Rot In Public Institutions’, Blasts Kyambogo University Over Guild President Expulsion

By Our Reporter

Tension is mounting in Uganda’s academic and political circles following the expulsion of Kyambogo University Guild President and National Unity Platform (NUP) Head of Institutions, Akiso Benjamin. The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eli Katunguka, signed off the dismissal on grounds of breaching peace, mounting roadblocks, and insubordination — all linked to a student-led protest against tuition policies.

In an official letter dated July 3, 2025, the university cited violations of multiple regulations under the Kyambogo University Students’ Regulations 2003, as amended in 2016. The dismissal was approved by the University Council during its 111th meeting on June 27, 2025.

Akiso is accused of organizing and leading protests that allegedly disrupted peace and defied university authority. However, supporters, opposition leaders, and rights groups have sharply criticized the decision, calling it politically motivated and an attack on the right to peaceful assembly.

Reacting to the development, NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, condemned the expulsion as a blatant act of repression.

“The Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University Eli Katunguka has dismissed the NUP Head of Institutions and current Guild President of Kyambogo University, comrade Akiso Benjamin from the University! His crime? Leading his fellow students in a peaceful protest against unfair tuition policies targeting students from poor families,” Bobi Wine stated.

He accused the government of President Museveni of politicizing public institutions and using them as tools to stifle dissent. “Museveni and his enablers have taken over all public institutions and are doing everything possible to silence any kind of dissent,” he added.

Bobi Wine pledged legal support for Akiso and praised the student leader’s courage. “I salute you, comrade Akiso, for remaining strong amidst this ordeal. You did not commit any crime for standing up for justice and fairness. History will be kind to you.”

The protest that led to Akiso’s expulsion was reportedly aimed at opposing recent adjustments in the university’s tuition structure, which student leaders claim disproportionately affect learners from low-income families. According to Akiso and his supporters, the changes were introduced without adequate consultation and placed an unfair burden on underprivileged students.

Legal and human rights activists have since weighed in, calling the university’s actions “draconian” and “an affront to student rights.” Others warn that the decision could trigger a wider wave of student unrest.

Kyambogo University is yet to issue any further comment beyond the official dismissal notice. Meanwhile, NUP has vowed to challenge the decision in court and mobilize solidarity campaigns across campuses in Uganda.

As the fallout continues, Akiso’s dismissal has transformed a university-level grievance into a national political flashpoint — once again highlighting the volatile intersection between student activism and authoritarian backlash in Uganda’s public institutions.
