A group of former Fly Express drivers has raised concerns over the management of funds collected by their association, alleging that billions of shillings contributed by members over the years have not been properly accounted for.
The drivers claim that approximately UGX 7 billion has been collected from members over the past 5years, but they say they have not received satisfactory accountability from the association’s leadership regarding how the funds have been utilized.
According to the concerned drivers, questions surrounding the management of the association’s finances have remained unanswered despite repeated requests for clarification. They further allege that members who have sought explanations have faced resistance from some leaders within the organization.
The allegations specifically mention association chairman Peter Kagwa and disciplinary leader Derrick Sebuliba, whom the drivers accuse of discouraging members from raising questions about financial matters. The claims have not been independently verified, and the leaders had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of publication.
The drivers also allege that UGX 9 million intended for activities under the government’s Parish Development Model (PDM) program was not utilized for its intended purpose, raising further concerns about transparency and accountability within the association.
Seeking intervention, the affected drivers have appealed to Local Government Ministers, Balaam Barugahara and Justine Nameere to help address the issues and facilitate an impartial review of the concerns raised.
In addition, the drivers contend that the Entebbe Fly Express stage was originally granted on a trial basis by Transport State Minister Fred Byamukama to assess operational performance and compliance. They argue that the arrangement was not intended to serve as a permanent allocation, a matter they believe should be revisited by the relevant authorities.
The drivers say their primary objective is to ensure transparency in the management of members’ contributions and to restore confidence within the association. They are calling upon government agencies and other responsible authorities to investigate the concerns and provide a fair resolution for all parties involved.
The development highlights growing calls for accountability and good governance within transport sector associations, as members increasingly seek greater transparency in the management of collective resources.
